Chapter 342: With a Bit of Intelligence
Chapter 342: With a Bit of Intelligence
Two powerful-looking bodyguards stood behind the man. Leo Wright’s brow furrowed the moment he saw them.
His Mandarin carried a hint of a Marinus accent, but it wasn’t strong. His voice wasn’t deep; rather, it had a certain playful lilt. The slight arch of his eyebrows was neither frivolous nor stern, making him seem very easy-going.
Vera Xavier raised an eyebrow and glanced at the man. She had noticed him long ago.
He had been standing behind the curtain when the conflict between her and Skylar Crowe broke out. She couldn’t figure out who he was, but she could sense he meant no harm, so she had ignored him.
Now that he had stepped forward to act as a peacemaker, she was a little surprised, but she said nothing.
The man looked at Vera Xavier, then at Susan Caldwell, then smiled again and stood right beside Vera Xavier.
Seeing this, Susan Caldwell assumed the man was Vera Xavier’s friend. She knew she wouldn’t be able to gain any advantage today.
She felt a little frustrated, but her face still wore an elegant and proper smile. "Sir, you’ve actually misunderstood. I bear this young lady no ill will. It’s just that she injured my friend, so I came to ask about the situation. Since she attacked first, she at least owes my friend an explanation, don’t you think?"
The man spread his hands. "It seems your friend has deceived you. I saw the conflict between your friend and my friend very clearly from the side. It was your friend who bumped into her first, then tried to hit her. Your friend initiated the attack three times, and she only fought back because she had no other choice. If anyone needs to give an explanation, I think it should be your friend apologizing to her."
Vera Xavier glanced at him when she heard this. ’When did I become his friend? Does this guy have to be so familiar?’
He sensed her gaze, turned his head slightly to give her a small smile, and then threw a flirtatious wink her way.
Susan Caldwell turned to Skylar Crowe. "Is that what happened?"
Skylar Crowe pouted and said, "So what if it is? In Veridia..."
"Shut up!" Susan Caldwell snapped. "How could you twist the truth like that? If this gentleman hadn’t stepped forward to explain what really happened, I would have been completely fooled by you! You’ve truly disappointed me!"
Skylar Crowe gave Susan an aggrieved look. "Apologize!" Susan ordered in a cold voice.
Skylar Crowe had always been proud and arrogant; how could she possibly apologize now? Her eyes welled up with aggrieved tears, but she refused to say a word.
Susan Caldwell sighed, a helpless look on her face. "Miss, I’m truly sorry. I mistakenly believed my friend’s side of the story, which is why this happened. I apologize to you on her behalf."
"There’s no need for an apology." Vera Xavier raised an eyebrow. "I just hope you’ll use your brain a bit more in the future and not be fooled again."
The thing Susan Caldwell was most proud of was her intelligence. It was the first time in her life anyone had accused her of not having a brain!
A sharp glint appeared in her eyes as she looked at Vera Xavier. Vera met her cold gaze without the slightest hesitation.
In the end, a cold smile touched the corners of Susan Caldwell’s lips. "Thank you for the reminder. I’ll remember it."
After saying her piece, she turned and walked out with Leo Wright and Skylar Crowe.
As soon as they were gone, Vera Xavier’s gaze deepened. She knew a feud between her and Susan Caldwell was now set in stone. However, their conflict was already a fight to the death, so whether this particular grudge was formed or not was of little importance.
She turned to the man with the earring and said, "Thank you!"
The man smiled and said, "My name is Alistair Forrest. Can we be friends?"
