The syllable ’ni’, destroys the arrogant mind; ’ba’, destroys the greedy mind; ’mi’, destroys the jealous mind; ’hum’, destroys all troubled minds.Furthermore, the refuge of all directions and three times can be summarized as the Three Jewels and Three Roots. The syllable ’om’, naturally attains the Dharma Body; ’ma’, naturally attains the Reincarnation; ’ni’, naturally attains the Incarnation; ’ba’, naturally attains the body of innate nature; ’mi’, naturally attains the manifest Bodhi Body; ’hum’, naturally attains the Unchanging Vajra Body.
The Saint Avalokitesvara’s manifestation on top of the head as Infinite Light Buddha, living in the realm of Dharma nature, the Great Dharma King Song Zan Gan Bu, said: "Om Mani Padme Hum", is the illusory body of words, capable of completing various benefits; it is also the sound of words capable of completing recitations. In the treasure of the Treasure Master Lirao Langba (former life of Dharma King Jidzun), it states: "The highest essence of all ten directions of the departing ones, gathered in this six-letter mantra, can swiftly accomplish the Buddhas of the three times." If one practices enlightenment upon this essential treasury pearl of the Buddhas, one can rapidly destroy all temporal illnesses, famines, wars, and damage from the four elements and other adverse conditions; increase longevity, virtues, wealth, and usage greatly; receiving the protection and prayers from all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and the heavenly protection white side. The deeds from the beginningless time, afflictions, sufferings, karmic obstacles, and traces can be purified entirely, distancing from the pain of reincarnation, evil paths, and intermediate states, reborn in the Pure Land adorned with lotus flowers, finally attaining the wisdom position of all-knowing Buddhas. All sutras, tantras, keys, and teachings say: This is the only wish-fulfilling pearl for those seeking liberation, thus one should diligently practice it. Such great merit of the Six-character Great Brightness Mantra, cannot be attained by those with thin fortune.
Buddha told the Bodhisattva who eliminates the obstacles, that at that time, the Buddha to obtain the "Om Mani Padme Hum" Six-character Mantra, offered countless worlds to tens of millions of Tathagatas, but still did not obtain it, later served and offered to Shenglian Tathagata, only then obtained it. Shenglian Tathagata also obtained it through serving and offering to infinite Buddhas. Therefore, now everyone who can recite this Dharma, should develop a sense of gratitude and rare thought, and faithfully accept and practice it.

During the time when Shakyamuni Buddha was in the world, there was a Bodhisattva named Kashyapa, one of the Eight Great Bodhisattvas, who earnestly requested Shizun for the transmission of the Six-character Great Brightness Mantra. Shizun replied, "In a past life, I learned this mantra from the Lotus Elephant King Buddha." As for Lotus Elephant King Buddha, where did he learn this mantra?
It turns out that Lotus Elephant King Buddha traveled through countless worlds without success in learning this mantra. Until arriving at the Western Pure Land, he visited Amitabha Buddha, who then requested Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva to transmit the mantra. At that time, the earth shook, heavenly rain scattered precious flowers, and various divine transformations and auspicious signs appeared. After obtaining the mantra, Lotus Elephant King Buddha universally liberated sentient beings, immeasurable and countless.
In past lives before attaining Buddhahood, Shizun received the transmission of this mantra from Lotus Elephant King Buddha, and after attaining Buddhahood, also transmitted this mantra many times. Yet, when Kashyapa Bodhisattva requested transmission, Shizun explained, "In a certain large city in India, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva incarnated as a layman, who dwells in filth, and has a wife and children, but he must not be underestimated, for he is truly an incarnation of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva."
Kashyapa Bodhisattva thus led twelve hundred Arhats to visit the layman. After the layman transmitted the Six-character Great Brightness Mantra, he displayed various divine transformations. Kashyapa Bodhisattva offered a necklace to the layman as an offering, but the layman refused, saying, "I do not need offerings; you should make offerings to Shakyamuni Buddha instead."...
The Six-character Great Brightness Mantra is the compassionate mantra of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, Samadhi is correct meditation and correct absorption. There are three methods, all closely aligned with Perfect Enlightenment and the Tathagatas of the ten directions, hence becoming Buddha. The Bodhisattvas of the ten directions use various expedients, all depend on these three types of endeavors; once perfectly attested, one attains Perfect Enlightenment. That is Shamatha, Samadhi (also Samadhi), and Zen. If sentient beings practice Samadhi, they should first contemplate all Tathagatas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions and the worlds of the ten directions, practicing diligently step by step and through various doors. Cultivating the Six-character Great Brightness Mantra falls under the scope of the Samadhi method. (To be continued.
