Chapter 87 Admission Notice
When he came out of the exam room, Zhang Mingxi was already waiting for him. She looked at him and asked, "How did it go?"
Qian Cheng said, "It's alright, I guessed quite a few."
Zhang Mingxi smiled: "Me too."
The two stood there, looking at each other, and suddenly they both laughed.
As he laughed, Zhang Mingxi's eyes reddened.
"Qian Cheng, we've finished the exam."
Qian Cheng nodded and reached out to take her hand.
"Yes, the exam is over."
The two stood at the entrance of the county's No. 1 Middle School, bathed in warm sunlight.
The people around me had all finished their exams; some were happy, some were frustrated, some were crying, and some were laughing.
They stood there, hand in hand, their hearts overflowing with emotion.
After a while, Zhang Mingxi said, "Let's go back."
Qian Cheng nodded and pulled her toward the station.
By the time we got back to the village, it was getting dark.
Hou Yufen was already waiting at the door. When she saw them return, she quickly came to greet them.
"How did it go? How did the exam go?"
Qian Cheng said, "It's alright, let's wait for the results."
Hou Yufen nodded, didn't ask any more questions, and led them inside for a meal.
Qian Lu and his sister-in-law were also at the dinner table. The sister-in-law, heavily pregnant, served food to Qian Cheng.
"Eat more, you've been exhausted this past month."
Qian Cheng nodded and buried his head in his food.
After dinner, he took Zhang Mingxi home.
When they reached the Zhang family's door, Zhang Mingxi stopped.
She looked at Qian Cheng and asked, "Do you think we can pass the exam?"
Qian Cheng thought for a moment and said, "Yes."
Zhang Mingxi asked, "How did you know?"
Qian Cheng said, "Because we tried our best."
Zhang Mingxi looked at him, her eyes reddening again.
She suddenly rushed over and hugged him.
Qian Cheng was stunned for a moment, then reached out and hugged her.
The two stood embracing each other in the moonlight, neither of them speaking.
After a while, Zhang Mingxi let go of him and whispered, "I'm going back."
Qian Cheng nodded: "Mm."
Zhang Mingxi turned around, ran into the yard, and closed the door.
Qian Cheng stood there, looking at the door, feeling a mix of emotions.
He turned and walked back.
The moon rose, round and bright, shining on the road.
As he walked, he reflected on the past six months.
From knowing nothing to having a business. From being alone to having someone I like. From not daring to dream of it all to finishing the college entrance exam.
Each and every step of this was taken by myself.
The college entrance exam is over, and life has suddenly become much easier.
Qian Cheng was a little unaccustomed to it for the first two days. When he woke up in the morning, he wanted to grab his books, but then he realized that the exam was over and he didn't need to study anymore.
He lay on the kang (a heated brick bed), looking at the ceiling, feeling empty inside.
Hou Yufen came in and saw him staring blankly. She asked, "What's wrong? Are you feeling unwell?"
Qian Cheng shook his head: "No, I just feel like I suddenly have nothing to do."
Hou Yufen laughed: "If you have nothing to do, just rest. You've been exhausted for the past six months."
Qian Cheng sat up, put on his clothes, and went out to wash his face.
The sun was high in the sky, warming everyone. The old elm tree in the yard was full of leaves, rustling in the wind.
After washing his face, he stood in the yard for a while, lost in thought.
Qian Lu came in from outside, saw him, and asked, "Chengzi, are you going to the county today?"
Qian Cheng thought for a moment and said, "Let's go. It's been a while since I've been there. Let's go see Boss Cui."
He got on his bicycle and headed towards the county.
It took a little over an hour to reach the county.
Qingping Restaurant was still the same as always, with people coming and going at the entrance. He entered through the back door, where Old Wei was busy at work. When he saw him, he greeted him.
"Little Qian is here? Haven't seen you for days."
Qian Cheng said, "I've finished the exam, so I came to check on you."
Old Wei smiled and asked, "How did the exam go?"
Qian Cheng said, "It's alright, let's wait for the results."
Old Wei nodded and said, "Boss Cui is upstairs, you can go up now."
Qian Cheng went upstairs and knocked on the door of Cui Minggui's office.
"Come in."
Qian Cheng pushed open the door and went in. Cui Minggui was sitting behind his desk reading a newspaper. When he saw him, he put down the newspaper and smiled.
"Little Qian's here? Finished the exam?"
Qian Cheng nodded and sat down opposite him.
Cui Minggui asked, "How did you do on the exam?"
Qian Cheng said, "It's alright, let's wait for the results."
Cui Minggui nodded, looking at him with admiration in his eyes.
"You're quite composed. You didn't panic after the exam, and you even thought about coming to see me."
Qian Cheng smiled: "Boss Cui has helped me so much, it's only right."
Cui Minggui waved his hand: "What help do you need? You're capable yourself."
After chatting for a while, Cui Minggui suddenly asked, "The exams are over, what are your plans?"
Qian Cheng said, "Let's wait for the results. If I pass the exam, I'll go to school. If I don't pass, I'll continue doing business."
Cui Minggui nodded: "Okay, I understand."
After leaving Qingping Hotel, Qian Cheng went to Xinhua Bookstore and bought two books for Zhang Mingxi. Then he rode his bike back.
It was still early when we got back to the village.
He went to the Zhang family first.
Zhang Mingxi was washing clothes in the yard. When she saw him come in, she stood up and shook the water off her hands.
"You're back?"
Qian Cheng nodded and handed her the two books.
Zhang Mingxi took it, glanced at it, and smiled.
"You bought books again?"
'
Qian Cheng said, "Since I'm idle anyway, I might as well read a book."
Zhang Mingxi smiled, pursed her lips, and put the book away.
The two sat in the courtyard, talking.
Zhang Mingxi asked, "When do you think we'll get the results?"
Qian Cheng said, "I heard it will take a month."
Zhang Mingxi sighed: "We still have to wait that long."
Qian Cheng looked at her and said, "What's the rush? What's meant to happen will happen."
Zhang Mingxi nodded and leaned on his shoulder.
The sun was shining, and it felt warm and cozy.
The courtyard was quiet, with only the sound of the wind rustling through the leaves.
After a while, Zhang Mingxi suddenly said, "Qian Cheng, if we both get into university, will we have to separate?"
'
Qian Cheng paused for a moment, thought for a moment, and said, "Not necessarily. Maybe I can get into a good school."
Zhang Mingxi looked up at him: "Really?"
Qian Cheng said, "Really. Even if we don't get into the same school, we can still be in the same city. We can still see each other on weekends."
Zhang Mingxi laughed when he heard this.
"That would be great."
Qian Cheng looked at her smiling and felt happy too.
Days passed by like this, one after another, waiting for the results.
The egg business continued as usual, yielding over forty catties a day. Bean sprouts also continued as usual, with fifty catties delivered to the mine daily. Qian Cheng returned to his old routine, collecting vegetables, delivering goods, reading books, and spending time with Zhang Mingxi.
Qian Lu still runs to the mine every day, and he's gotten even darker and thinner, but he's full of energy.
Hou Yufen operates the sewing machine every day, making clothes for her family and baby clothes for her unborn grandson.
The eldest sister-in-law's belly was getting bigger and bigger, and she was having trouble walking. Qian Lu wouldn't let her do any work, so she just sat there all day watching Hou Yufen make clothes, occasionally helping by handing her needle and thread.
Life was peaceful and stable.
That evening, the family was having dinner when they suddenly heard someone shouting outside.
"Chengzi! Is Chengzi home?"
'
It was Captain Li's voice.
Qian Cheng put down his bowl and went outside.
Captain Li stood in the courtyard, holding an envelope in his hand.
"Yours, it was transferred from the commune."
Qian Cheng took it and saw that it was addressed to "Qian Cheng" and signed "Provincial Admissions Office" at the bottom.
