Chapter 1 What the heck is the Doomsday Farmer System?
"Pleasant Goat, Beautiful Goat, Lazy Goat, Boiling Goat..."
"Slow Sheep?"
"Slow Sheep!"
In the farmyard, Xu Ran called out twice into the sheepfold, but there was no response.
Four silly sheep stood beside him, waiting with him.
The weather is perfect today; the sun is warm but not glaring, making it the ideal time to graze sheep.
The farm has twenty sheep. Xu Ran opened the sheepfold gate, and only four sheep ran out. After a quick roll call, he found that Slow Sheep was indeed not among them.
Slow Sheep is the leader of the sheep, and many sheep follow him. If he doesn't come out, the other sheep won't come out either.
He turned to look at the one-month-old Border Collie cub made of meteorite at his feet.
This little guy is not much bigger than a football, and he is sitting on the ground in a cute pose, scratching his neck with his hind legs.
"Little Grey, your parents aren't home today. Go and chase Slow Sheep out."
Xu Ran gave commands to the one-month-old Border Collie puppy.
Upon hearing this, the little Border Collie raised its head and looked at Xu Ran, its cute little face filled with astonishment, as if asking:
"I?"
"Give it a try," Xu Ran encouraged it.
The farm has three Border Collies: a golden Border Collie and a merle Border Collie. The two Border Collies mated and had a merle Border Collie puppy, which is also their only child, Little Gray.
Both of the adult Border Collies went to the city for vaccinations today, so they're not here.
The task of accompanying Xu Ran in herding sheep fell to Xiao Hui.
Little Grey received the command, wagged its tail, and its shepherding genes awakened.
It strode with disdainful little steps toward the sheep deep inside the pen, then crouched down, adopting a wary, aggressive posture, and let out a threatening growl at Slow Sheep:
"Woof!"
That's called a babyish voice, it's very cute.
When Slow Sheep heard the bleating, he didn't tolerate it at all. He took two steps forward and nudged Little Gray with his head.
This headbutt sent Little Grey tumbling backward twice before it stopped. It scrambled and ran backward to Xu Ran's feet, then cautiously looked towards the sheepfold.
Slow Sheep's behavior seems to be saying: "Your parents aren't here, so why would I be afraid of you?"
Seeing Little Gray's disheveled appearance, Xu Ran couldn't help but chuckle at first, then shouted towards the sheepfold:
"If you don't come out to eat, then nobody's going to eat at all!"
As soon as he finished speaking, Slow Sheep slowly walked out of the sheepfold, and the other sheep followed him out.
Xu Ran squatted down, stroked Little Gray, and comforted it.
Then he drove the flock of sheep outside.
Little Grey Grey regained its lively spirit, its feet seemingly springy, hopping and skipping along with Xu Ran.
This is Xu Ran's farm.
After graduating from university, Xu Ran first went to work for a technology company in a big city.
But the pressure of living in a big city left him feeling breathless.
I start work at 9 a.m. and work until 11 p.m. every day. I don't rest on Saturdays, and I basically lie in my rented room all day on Sundays.
so cycle.
The salary and benefits are decent, but you have to work yourself to the bone.
Moreover, my colleagues are all incredibly dedicated; some even sleep at the company.
After doing this for a while, he felt very unhappy, so he chose to go home and inherit his family's small farm.
The farm isn't very big, and it's not one of those popular tourist farms or family farms that are all the rage these days.
Tourist farms make a profit by offering activities such as taking photos, family outings, fishing, and fruit picking. It sounds great, but in reality, it's very difficult to run, and there are countless examples of people losing money.
After all, businesses that rely on customers to make money are becoming increasingly difficult to operate these days.
Their family still runs a traditional farm, making a profit through planting and raising livestock.
The main crop is watermelon, including open-field seasonal watermelons and greenhouse off-season watermelons. Livestock farming mainly involves raising pigs, sheep, and chickens.
As for the farm's income, it's barely enough to get by.
Raising livestock is difficult now.
Take pork for example, the price of pork has fallen so drastically that farmers are losing money raising pigs, and the selling price is not even enough to cover the cost of feed.
There's no way around it, there are just too many people raising pigs.
That's how the market works: if too many people raise meat, they lose money; but if fewer people raise meat in a couple of years, the price of meat will go up again.
The farm's main source of revenue is its greenhouses, where off-season vegetables and fruits are very successful, generating consistently good income.
After Xu Ran inherited the farm, his family entrusted him with its management.
The farm is located at the foot of a mountain, covering an area of 100 acres. It is surrounded by flat land and there is a small mountain village next to it.
Land prices are very cheap here.
Next to it is an abandoned farm, which has been abandoned. I heard that the farm owner went to the city to do business, and the farm has not been rented out.
Xu Ran visited that farm.
The walls of the low red brick houses have large areas of peeling paint, some bricks are loose, most windows are missing glass, and many parts of the roof have collapsed, exposing dark rafters, on which several sparrows have built their nests.
Rusty farm tools were piled up in the corner of the yard.
It seems to foreshadow the fate of those who set up farms here.
Xu Ran's farm was also somewhat dilapidated. The tarpaulin of the greenhouse was gray, and the surrounding wooden fence was broken in several places. It was barely tied up with rusty wire, and it would make a "creaking" sound when the wind blew by.
He and his employees lived in single-story houses.
The farm currently has two employees who live in a village not far from the farm.
The two were very familiar with the work on the farm and were quite diligent in their work.
The farm is developing steadily now. Although it's still a bit busy, at least the mental stress is less.
Take herding sheep for example.
Throughout the entire process, the brain does not need to think or cope with various pressures.
Just follow the route.
And they also have Border Collies to help.
Xu Ran drove the flock of sheep out of the farm and onto the road leading into the mountains.
The roadside is lined with lush wild grass, which you can eat freely. The sheep are picky eaters; they specifically seek out fresh grass with seeds and flower buds to eat.
Xu Ran would just accompany them for a walk and then come back; that would be enough.
Life was very easy.
The little Border Collie continued to follow.
Its parents are not here today; this is the first time it has come out to herd sheep alone.
So I'm curious about everything.
This was supposed to be a peaceful and uneventful day.
Just then, a voice suddenly rang in Xu Ran's mind.
[Host detected to have transmigrated to a post-apocalyptic world; Post-Apocalyptic Farmer System is being bound...]
[Binding successful.]
Upon hearing this voice, Xu Ran was slightly taken aback.
system?
Did I hear that right?
I wasn't hit by a truck, nor did I die at my workplace. I wasn't reborn, nor did I time travel. My parents are still alive. So how did this system end up in my body?
Hallucination?
And what is the post-apocalyptic farmer system?
Isn't this the 21st century?
The system has been bound to the wrong person?
Xu Ran looked around.
It's summer now, the sun is shining brightly, the surrounding vegetation is lush, and unknown wildflowers dot the landscape, creating a vibrant atmosphere.
This has absolutely nothing to do with the apocalypse.
[Congratulations, host, you have received the newbie gift pack. Would you like to open it?]
Then, the system's voice sounded again, and at the same time, a blue system panel appeared in front of Xu Ran's eyes, with the words clearly displayed on the panel.
Now, Xu Ran was certain that she was indeed bound to the system.
The system panel has two options: "Yes" and "No".
Xu Ran chose "yes".
Now that we're already linked, let's see what this system is all about.
[Host has opened the newbie gift pack and received a random reward:]
[1. Premium Nutrient Solution * 1 bottle: Improves the host's physical condition; effective only for the host.]
[2. One bag of black fertilizer: A highly effective fertilizer that can improve crop growth rate and replenish crop nutrients.]
[3. Skill: Boost Growth (Beginner). Increases crop growth efficiency in the host's farm by 5%]
[4. Skills: Master Pig Farmer. The host is proficient in pig farming techniques, especially skilled in cooking pig feed, postpartum care for sows, and bathing pigs.]
The reward information appears on the panel.
He opened the system space and could see that the premium nutrient solution and black fertilizer were inside, ready to be collected at any time.
Meanwhile, his skill bar shows that he currently possesses two skills: [Growth Boost] and [Pig Farming Master].
"It's true! I really am bound to the system!"
"Although the name doesn't seem quite right, the system might have made a mistake."
"But something is better than nothing."
"I never expected that herding sheep could lead to being bound to a system. What a pleasant surprise!"
