Chapter 327 - 149: Qualitative Change, Choice
"Might you be Shen Bai of Fenglin State?"
Shen Bai nodded. "I am. Why have you stopped me?"
The stout man offered a faint smile, slowly closing his folded fan. "Oh, nothing important. I just want to borrow your title for a while."
"My title? What title is that?" Shen Bai asked.
The stout man sneered. "You, Shen Bai, have made a name for yourself in the Jianghu as the Six Extremes Young Master. I’ve also heard you’re supposedly the strongest expert among the Observatory’s younger generation. We don’t believe you’re worthy of that title, so we’ve come to take it. Once I defeat you, it will naturally fall to me."
Shen Bai’s expression remained cold and impassive.
Seeing his reaction, the stout man frowned. "What’s that supposed to mean?"
Shen Bai didn’t answer him. Instead, he patted Amber, who was nestled in his arms.
Amber landed on the ground with a low growl. Its form immediately swelled, transforming it into a tiger-sized Deceitful Beast that radiated a chilling aura.
Amber’s appearance made everyone present gasp.
The stout man’s eyes widened. "A Deceitful Beast... so the rumors are true. The Jianghu whispers that you own one, but this alone won’t be enough to make us back down."
Shen Bai stroked Amber’s head, muttering to himself, ’Forget it. You don’t know how to hold back. These guys just have rocks for brains; no need to kill them over it.’
"What did you say?" The stout man’s face grew even colder.
He wasn’t the only one; the others reacted the same way.
Nearby, many other members of the Observatory weren’t as impulsive. They just watched, enjoying the show.
They had a feeling the two groups were about to clash, and it promised to be a spectacular fight.
But what happened next left them all completely stunned.
It was spectacular, all right, but the spectacle was over far too quickly.
Shen Bai drew Cold Moon from his waist and gave the blade a slight shake.
In a flash, streaks of blood-red Sword Qi pierced through the limbs of all six men.
The six men collapsed to the ground, screaming in agony.
Shen Bai stroked his chin. "Brother Ouyang?"
Ouyang Sword turned around. "What is it?"
"For someone at the Meridian Realm, an injury like this should heal quickly, right?" Shen Bai asked.
Ouyang Sword nodded confidently. "A few days at most. This is the first time I’ve ever seen you show mercy, Brother Shen."
Shen Bai shook his head. "Some people won’t tolerate a third offense. I don’t tolerate a second."
As he spoke, a mocking glint appeared in Shen Bai’s eyes.
"How about it? Why don’t you push through the pain, stand up, and provoke me one more time? I guarantee I’ll chop your heads off."
Although his tone was nonchalant, his killing intent steadily rose as he spoke.
The spectating members of the Observatory all frowned.
Fast. It was just too fast.
They hadn’t even seen Shen Bai draw his sword, yet the challengers were already on the ground.
Moreover, the Sword Qi was so powerful that his opponents had been utterly defenseless.
A few of the Observatory members frowned, silently calculating if they could have withstood Shen Bai’s Sword Qi.
As for the men on the ground, their faces were ashen and beaded with cold sweat. They didn’t answer Shen Bai’s question.
They had all worked their way up from low-ranking constables, so they could sense the killing intent radiating from him. They knew he was serious.
If they provoked him again, he would actually kill them all.
"Enough. How dull." Shen Bai sat back in the carriage. "Brother Ouyang, let’s go."
Ouyang Sword let out a hearty laugh. Without sparing a glance for the men on the ground, he pulled the reins tight, guiding the carriage toward the end of the street.
This time, no one dared to stand in their way.
Thanks to their Meridian Realm cultivation, the injured men’s wounds healed quickly.
Before long, they were back on their feet.
They exchanged glances, let out a cold huff, and slipped away quietly. No one mentioned what had just happened, much less tried to escalate the conflict.
Thanks to Shen Bai’s intervention, the conflict ended in an almost farcical manner.
With the show over, the numerous Observatory members exchanged looks and began to disperse.
The common folk who had watched the spectacle also began to disperse, chatting amongst themselves as they went.
Peace gradually returned to the inn.
...
On the second floor of the inn, an ordinary-looking young man held up his wine cup, watching the carriage recede into the distance before taking a slow sip.
The man was so plain-looking he would be impossible to pick out of a crowd.
Yet his eyes, beneath their calm surface, held a hint of madness.
’Shen Bai, Shen Bai... you’re as ruthlessly decisive as ever. I’m truly looking forward to our next encounter.’
The young man poured himself another cup of wine. After drinking it, he began to sway his head back and forth, drawing repeated glances from the people nearby.
Just then, a middle-aged man came up to the second floor. He walked over to the table by the window, sat across from the young man, and studied his face intently.
The young man touched his face and chuckled. "This is a top-tier Disguise. Even you can’t see through it, can you?"
The middle-aged man nodded. "The organization sent me to assist you this time," he said nonchalantly. "So I won’t ask any questions. I’ll do whatever you tell me."
The young man said cheerfully, "For our dear Lord Li to take orders from a mere Copper Token member like me... the sun must be setting in the east."
