Chapter 46 Thanksgiving
Chapter 46 Thanksgiving
In the stereotypes of Easterners, Christmas is often considered to be the most important holiday in America.
But in the hearts of Americans, Thanksgiving is the most important holiday, undoubtedly surpassing all other holidays such as Christmas and Easter.
But behind this festival lies irony and darkness, a real-life version of the farmer and the snake.
Because it also has another name, the day of exemption from slaughter.
More than four hundred years ago, refugees who could not make a living in Europe were forced to come to the new continent of the Americas. The Native Americans not only did not drive them away, but also kindly provided them with necessities and taught them how to farm and hunt.
To express their gratitude to the Native Americans, the settlers held a grand celebration, which is the origin of Thanksgiving.
However, no one expected that this would become the beginning of a nightmare for the Native Americans.
Once the European refugees adapted to their new life in the Americas and witnessed the continent's richness, their true nature was revealed.
More and more people plundered the land of the Native Americans, and even the first Native American tribe to help refugees was wiped out fifty years later, with the tribal chief's head still stuck on a spear as a form of protest.
Although this event was fraught with sin, Thanksgiving has been preserved as a tradition.
Furthermore, to express gratitude to the Native Americans, there was a saying at the time that they should not be slaughtered on this day.
Modern Americans have no idea about the origin of Thanksgiving; many believe it is about thanking God for guiding their ancestors to this bountiful land.
"Is this what you mean by showing off your skills?" Ernst stared at the food on the table, his face full of questions.
Fruit salad is a staple on the dining table.
Vegetable salad, unnecessary.
Beef sauce pasta: Mix semi-finished ground beef with sauce in a pot, then pour it over cooked pasta.
"Don't worry about that, just watch how my turkey is roasted."
Craig appeared confident and self-assured.
When Ernst opened the oven, he found a large lump of chocolate, but it was exquisitely crafted; the chef had sculpted it into the shape of a turkey.
Thanksgiving is also known as Turkey Day, and there's no doubt that turkeys are the main theme today.
But for Ernst, if Thanksgiving requires eating turkey, he'd rather not have the holiday at all.
Don't be fooled by the fact that turkeys are a frequent sight on American tables; they're roasted to a golden brown and crispy perfection, looking incredibly appetizing.
In fact, turkey doesn't taste very good; it has a peculiar fishy smell.
Its meat is tougher than that of regular chicken; it's very dry and tastes like chewing cardboard.
Even with the Americans' culinary talent, Ernst felt that nothing was as good as the greenery on the table.
"Why don't you go celebrate the holidays with your Mary and godson instead of coming here to torment me?"
With Thanksgiving approaching, Ernst gave Liu Huiying a three-day holiday.
Her son's family lives in California, and it only takes three or four hours to get there and back.
Ernst used to spend Thanksgiving either back in Texas or with Galin.
Now that Garlins is gone and he's too lazy to go back to Texas, he's all alone and was planning to live by himself. But unexpectedly, Craig, this uninvited guest, showed up at his door early in the morning with two big bags of groceries.
"It's here, have a taste."
Looking at the charcoal-black turkey on the table, and meeting Craig's eager and expectant gaze, Ernst narrowed his eyes.
"Spit it out if you have something to say."
Something's wrong, this is way too damn wrong.
Ernst, who had almost never cooked before, suddenly abandoned women's behinds and entered men's kitchens. He got a taste of it.
"What do you mean? As your brother, I came here to spend Thanksgiving with you, and this is how you treat me?"
Clutching his chest, Craig dramatically said, "You've hurt me so much, I feel like I'm going to stop breathing."
"Am I wrong? Well, you're the one who's going to miss this opportunity."
Craig's expression changed instantly. "Well, today is Thanksgiving. Since you insist on doing this, I'd like to ask you to do a small favor for me and fulfill your wish."
Ernst rolled his eyes, knowing full well that this guy was up to no good.
"Hehe," Craig rubbed his hands together, looking ingratiating. "I heard that '007' is about to be greenlit? Do you think I could get a female role? Just some lines."
The "Tomorrow Never Dies" project has been confirmed. It will be officially launched after Thanksgiving, followed by actor auditions.
Over the past week, "The Man from Earth" continued to perform well.
Although it relinquished its title as the top-grossing film of the week, it still came in second with a weekly box office of $4412 million, surpassing "The English Patient" with $4197 million and only $563 million less than "Space Jam".
Who would have thought that the clash between "The Man from Earth" and "Space Jam" would simultaneously increase publicity budgets and hurt "The English Patient," which everyone previously thought had no box office conflict?
The English Patient probably thought the same way, assuming there was no competition and they could sit back and relax.
But disaster struck unexpectedly; box office revenue plummeted in the past week, falling $1300 million short of institutional predictions.
Based on box office data from the past week, "The Man from Earth" has grossed $1.6 million in North America.
Meanwhile, overseas markets have performed strongly, with global box office revenue exceeding $200 million.
The forecasting agency has once again raised its global box office forecast for "The Man from Earth," giving it a global box office prediction of $3.6 million.
MGM didn't just make a fortune from this movie; they made a killing.
With the money in hand, the launch of "007 Tomorrow Never Dies" was naturally put on the agenda.
"You got someone pregnant?" Ernst seemed to have found something to amuse him, his gossip-loving nature burning brightly.
"How could that be? You haven't even gotten the hang of it yet."
Ernst was somewhat surprised. Could this be the love of his life?
"Her daughter has always wanted to enter the entertainment industry, but her alcoholic husband is incapable of doing so. The other party has already agreed that if I can get her daughter a small role in a big-budget film, she will agree to be with me..."
Greg chuckled awkwardly, looking utterly lewd.
Ernst was speechless. He thought this guy had changed his ways, but he was still in Cao Cao's good mood.
"Wait a minute? Haven't you been getting really close to that Russian woman lately?"
"Isn't this a mother and daughter together? It's too tempting!"
Ernst wanted to curse. "I haven't even experienced this yet, but you're playing it pretty fancy."
"Don't you only like women who have given birth?"
Because of this incident, Ernst once suspected that Craig only liked things that felt relaxed.
In Hollywood, there are many such scammers who, under the guise of helping girls fulfill their dreams, take them to meet all sorts of "big shots."
These people are usually completely naked and wearing masks; if you didn't know better, you'd think it was a movie set.
After making a quick buck, and seeing that they can't keep their promises and their scheme is about to be exposed, these scammers take the money and go out to enjoy themselves for a while.
In Hollywood, the most despicable thing is when an organization sells itself without ever paying a single penny.
"You'd better clean up the kitchen first."
Ernst got up and went upstairs, with Craig making repeated assurances behind him.
"Don't worry, I'll clean the kitchen even cleaner than if it were brand new."
Greg knew Ernst wouldn't refuse such a small favor.
I came here today because I was afraid the other person would be lonely.
This was the warmth between the two of them; Ernst understood it, and Craig knew it too.
No need for many words; everything is understood without being spoken.
He went to the study, picked up a document from the desk and looked at it, then made a phone call.
"Tell them that I will fly over to meet them the day after tomorrow, and I will not wait for them after that date."
A voice on the phone reminded him, "Ernst, you should know it's Thanksgiving holiday."
Ernst smiled. "For me, there's no such thing as a holiday. Remember, they're the ones who are more eager."
